An RPPC is a Real Photo Post Card. You can still buy or make them today. They were popular in the very early 1900s.
This is a tintype. Too fragile to carry around in your pocket, they were usually placed in a small case.
Found this inside. It says "This was taken at Springfield Indiana by Mr [something] in 1856 when I was in my 25th year"
Some of these pictures look hazy as they are taken from glass plate negatives, and the emulsion, which contains silver, oxidized.
